Retainer Instructions

  • Until Dr. Austin Rahaim directs you to the contrary, continue to always wear your retainer.
  • Remove your retainer from your mouth before eating. And, for safekeeping, always place the retainer into the retainer storage case. (It should be noted that most retainer dental appliances are lost in school cafeterias as well as restaurants.)
  • Using both a toothbrush as well as toothpaste, clean your retainer thoroughly once each day. You should only use warm water and never hot water. Cleaning your retainer once each day will remove plaque and eliminate odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic dental appliance cleaners may be utilized. However, these types of cleaners can never be substituted for brushing the retainer with toothpaste.
  • Your retainer should always be placed in the storage case you will be provided with when the retainer is not in your mouth. Your family pet dog will love to chew on your retainer unless you secure it in the retainer storage case for safekeeping.
  • After the initial installation of your retainer, you might find it difficult to speak in the manner that you are accustomed to. This concern will be alleviated if you practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud.
  • Retainers can be broken. Consequently, it is important that you treat your retainer with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call BayView Orthodontics in Bay St. Louis immediately.
  • If you think that your retainer needs adjustment, or if you have any questions or concerns whatsoever, call BayView Orthodontics at (228) 467-2211. Under no circumstances should you make any attempts to adjust your retainer yourself.
  • Be sure to bring your retainer to all appointments you schedule with BayView Orthodontics.
  • It is expensive to replace a retainer. However, with proper care a retainer will last for many years!
  • Be sure to remove your retainer before you go swimming and always store the retainer in the retainer storage case.
  • Never allow your retainer to be placed in hot water.
  • Also, never place your retainer on your hot automobile dashboard. Never place your retainer in your pockets which are subject to elevated body heat levels. Never place your retainer in your homes dishwasher or washing machine.
  • Never wrap your retainer in either paper or cloth napkins.
  • Always store your retainer in the retainer storage container in a cool, dry place.
